SA COMPOSTERS JOIN ALDINGA KITCHEN GARDEN

The Kitchen Garden Team is delighted to Welcome Matt and the SA COMPOSTERS Crew to the Aldinga Beach R-7 Kitchen Garden Program.
SA Composters have been supplying South Australia with rich living soils, compost, mulch and other garden products for over twenty years and are regular stall holders at the Willunga Farmer's Market, another of our supporters. Matt has kindly supplied a huge quantity of compost and mulch at hugely discounted prices to help get our orchard underway and looking beautiful. So thanks SA COMPOSTERS and don't forget to support them if you can and go to the Friends of the Kitchen Garden Program to find a link to their website.

Spring Fever in the Garden!

Spring fever has hit Aldinga and we are really excited with our latest developments, including the reycling of old form work into new raised garden beds, the installation of the chook shed and paving and the awesome hothouse! We were lucky enough to have a bunch of hardworking volunteers join the Garden crew last weekend and the hothouse area was paved and the structure assembled and erected. The hothouse is now going great guns, giving our seedlings a huge boost in the right direction. The weather has been mixed in Aldinga lately, with some cold nights, chilly mornings, cloudy and sunny days and some rain getting sprinkled around too!
Helen McGrice and Mick Fishlock have nearly completed the rendering on the orchard wall and planter tank which looks incredible and really sets of the beautiful mosaics created by students involved in the program.
Our Eat Well Be Active Garden is progressing really well, with a big crop of onions, monster garlic, artichokes, Warigal greens and Rhubarb growing strongly. We have also added some pumpkins to ramble and some aspargus into the beds also.
Some recycled formwork has been screwed together, lined with plastic and geotextile and stencilled to create a fantastic new raised bed.

The Chook shed...now to add the run and the chooks!

The Kitchen kicks off...

Finally, after a wait that seemed like an eternity, our kitchen is finished and open for action. We have been so pleased with the end result - check out the other pics in the Kitchen photos page via the link on the right hand side. The kitchen really is the jewel in the crown of our newly re-developed building and we could not be happier with what we have ended up with. With 6 sinks, four ovens, 3 electric and 3 gas cook tops, plus fridges, massive amounts of storage and a bright, well lit contemporary space, we have created an asset to our school community that will serve up the benefits of healthy home grown food for many years to come.

Thankyou Kitchenaid....

Every chef dreams of having an iconic piece of kitchenware in their kit and now thanks to the wonderful folk at Kitchenaid, the Aldinga School Community can now live the dream with the donation of a beautiful appliance - A brand new Kithcenaid stand mixer....and we can't wait to sample the tasty treats prepared in this little number....

The Orchard Commences

Over the last few weeks, a small but dedicated team has been working on the construction of the orchard and wall in the Junior Primary Playground. We have been working under the wise supervision and guidance of Helen McGrace of Stoneartists at Aldinga Township who has been pivotal in getting the job done! We have also started planting the first fruit trees and are about to add a number more thanks to the genenrous donation of Blue Cottage Almonds in Willunga. The fruit trees are just about to burst into life and we look like having a good season to get them healthy and established in rich and life giving soil provided by Marty Vaher, a well known local supplier of energised and healthy soil and composts. Thanks Marty for helping us get growing! Miss Branford's class has also been busy creating stepping stone pavers for the orchard and we look forward to seeing them finished off and looking great soon!
A bit of a mud pit at the moment, but soon to be our productive orchard!

THANKS TO OUR LATEST SUPPORTERS

We are really happy to recognize the support of Maryke and the Crew from Flour Power Breads who have donated $200 towards the program. Maryke is a former parent of students at Aldinga Beach and we appreciate her help in putting money towards the program which will go towards buying equipment for our baking and breadmaking station in the new kitchen! Thanks heaps guys and we encourgae all of our students and families to get to the Willunga Farmer's Market every Saurday to try the great range of tasty bread from Flour Power.

We also continue to recieve great support from Nikki Herewane and the Aldinga Timber and Hardware family (see link in our supporters page) who have managed to rustle up a bix box of seeds and other equipment from their suppliers for our garden which will be really helpful in establishing our spring and summer crops. Thanks guys and we appreciate your support and friendly service!

Kitchen Garden Update - New Sponsors and Supporters join us!

As term two has got underway, we have begun our first cooking classes in the temporary kitchen area, with children putting together some fantastic pumpkin gnocchi with sage butter and a lovely caesar saladm topped off with a raspberry coconut slice. The children have worked with such purpose and have been really keen to try new flavours. As we are only running half classes at the moment, they have also really enjoyed cooking for the rest of the classm who have obviously enjoyed eating the efforts.

In some other excellent news, we are pleased to announce that Blue Cottage Almonds of Willunga have come on board as principal sponsors of our orchard. Proprietor Jude McBain is a local food identity and has been supportive of our kitchen garden program since the very early days of it's inception and it is fantastic to have the support of Blue Cottage Almonds.

Our Autumn / Winter Garden is coming along nicely, despite the best efforts of some very hungry cabbage moths. We recently received another awesome donation, this time in the form of a chicken coop, from school supporter and mentor Peter Dossett. The children were very excited to see the arrival of the coop and are looking even more forward to seeing the arrival of the hens when the run and coop have been properly established.

Welcome One and All!

Welcome to the Aldinga Beach R-7 School Kitchen Garden Blog. We are proud participants in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation program that educates children and the community about the virtues of good food, as well as the skills to grow it and prepare it. We live for the foundation motto of 'Grow, Harvest, Prepare, Share' and we believe that this maxim embodies the philosophy of our Kitchen Garden program at Aldinga beach R-7 School.

We are situated on the coastal fringe of the Fleurieu Peninsula and Aldinga has a long history of agriculture and viticulture, the spirit of which is certainly flourishing within our school at the moment. So, stay tuned to the blog to keep track of our growth and learning through the Kitchen Garden program.
