About the program

The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program was first implemented in late 2009 at Aldinga Beach R-7 School and has steadily grown into an amazing part of the Primary Years Curriculum at the site.

8 classes participate in alternating weekly gardening and cooking lessons, where they work collaboratively with specialists, teachers, volunteers and each other to grow, harvest, prepare and share tasty, delicious, fresh food together.

We have a main food garden located in the centre of the school, which is complimented by an orchard and several other satellite gardens and plantings, including a 'bush supermarket' indigenous garden area featuring an array of plant species traditionally used for food, clothing, medicine, shelter and tools.

In mid 2011 we took delivery of our brand new kitchen area which was completed as part of the redevelopment of our main building. This state of the art, beautifully and cleverly designed area is the show piece of our program and also provides a workspace for myriad other activities and programs outside of the Kitchen Garden Program, including a breakfast club, special eduaction, boys and girsl cooking groups and sessions for students with English as a second language.
